Rules of the Klaverjassen card game
Klaverjassen is one of the most popular traditional Dutch trick-taking games. It is played with 4 players in two fixed teams sitting opposite each other. The goal is to work together with your partner to collect points and melds by winning tricks.
Below you will find the complete explanation of gameplay, trump selection and scoring in Klaverjassen.
Cards and values
The game is played with 32 cards (7 through Ace).
The value of the cards depends on whether a card is trump or not:
| Trump | Points | No trump | Points |
|---|---|---|---|
| Jack | 20 points | Ace | 11 points |
| 9 (nel) | 14 points | Ten | 10 points |
| Ace | 11 points | King | 4 points |
| Ten | 10 points | Queen | 3 points |
| King | 4 points | Jack | 2 points |
| Queen | 3 points | 7, 8, 9 | - |
| 7, 8 | - |
Bidding round
- The dealer deals all cards (8 each).
- The player left of the dealer is first to pass or "play/go".
- The first player who "goes" forms the playing team with the opposite player and leads the first trick.
- If everyone passes, the first player chooses a trump suit and the game begins.
- Configurable bidding rounds if everyone passes:
- a second bidding round follows in which each player may make a new bid with a self-chosen trump suit
if everyone passes again in the second round, the cards are redealt
- the first player chooses a trump suit and the game begins.
Gameplay
- The player left of the dealer leads the first card.
- Players must always follow suit if they can.
- If you cannot follow suit, you must play trump (if you have any).
- If a trump has already been played, you must play a higher trump (if you have one).
- Configurable trump rules:
– Trumps not required: if you cannot follow suit, you may play any card (including no trump).
– Overtrumping not required: if trump is played, you may play a lower trump even if you have a higher one. - The winner of the trick takes the cards and leads the next trick. After 8 tricks the round ends.
Scoring
Points in tricks:- All trick points are added per team.
- The team that wins the last trick receives 10 extra points.
- A pit (winning all tricks) gives a bonus of 100 points.

- 3 consecutive cards: 20 points
- 4 consecutive cards: 50 points
