Rules of the card game BLUFF
Bluff is a popular card game for 2 to 8 players. The goal is to get rid of all your cards as quickly as possible. Below you will find the complete rules and several variants.
Cards and values
- The game is played with 52 cards and 2 jokers.
- Jokers always count as the requested value.
Preparation
- All players receive 7 cards.
- The remaining cards form a face-down draw pile.
- The bottom-left display shows which cards are still in the game.
Gameplay
- The player to the dealer’s left starts.
- They select one or more cards and place them face-down on the table.
- They declare the value of these cards.
- The declared value does not have to match the actual cards — hence the bluff.
- The next player may draw a card or play cards matching the declared value.
- Each following player may play the requested value or something else.
- If a player has 4 cards of the same value, those cards are removed from the game.
- If the draw pile is empty, you must always play cards.
Bluff or not?
- After someone plays cards, all other players may check whether the last played cards match the declared value.
- Cards played earlier do not matter — only the most recent play is checked.
- Cards drawn from the pile are irrelevant.
- If the cards match, the checker receives the entire pile.
- The player whose cards were checked starts the next round.
- If the value does not match, the player who played the cards receives the pile, and the checker starts the next round.
Example – bluff
- Jan plays a 5 and a king and says they are aces.
- No one checks.
- Truus must also play aces but plays a 7.
- Ellen draws a card.
- Piet checks Truus’s cards.
- Truus lied and receives all cards from the pile; Piet may play again.
Example – no bluff
- Jan plays 2 jacks and declares jacks.
- No one checks.
- Truus plays 2 jacks and a joker.
- Piet checks (5 cards played, only 4 jacks exist).
- Truus did not lie; Piet receives the pile and Truus may play again.
- Piet receives all 4 jacks; they are removed from the game, leaving him with a joker.
Timing
- If multiple players try to check, the first click counts.
- If you check but the next player has already played, you are too late.
Winner
- When a player plays all their cards, they receive 1 point.
- The first player to reach 3 points wins (adjustable).
Variants
- Winning points can be set from 2 to 10.
- Starting cards can be set from 3 to 10.
- Jokers can be set from 1 to 10.
