Rules of the Mizerka Card Game
Mizerka is a trick-taking card game for 3 players. The game is played with a standard deck of 52 cards. What makes Mizerka unique is that it is played with different contracts and players can exchange cards with an extra pile of cards: the talon.
Below you will find the explanation of the gameplay and scoring.
Cards and Contracts
- Cards have their standard values: 2 through 10, Jack, Queen, King, and Ace.
- There are 6 possible contracts: Clubs trump, Diamonds trump, Hearts trump, Spades trump, Sans (no trump), and Mizerka.
- In the Mizerka contract, your goal is to win as few tricks as possible.
- In the other contracts, your goal is to win as many tricks as possible.
- Each player may only play each contract once.
Preparation
- The dealer first deals 6 cards to each player.
- In addition, an extra face-down pile is formed: the talon.
- The player to the dealer's left then chooses the contract for this round, based on their first 6 cards.
- There are 6 types of contracts; each contract can only be chosen once.
- Next, dealing continues until each player has 13 cards.
- The talon will then also consist of 13 face-down cards.
Exchanging with the Talon
- First, the player to the dealer's left may discard cards and take the same number of new cards from the talon.
- Next, the player to the dealer's right may do the same, but only with the remaining cards.
- If there are still cards left in the talon after that, the dealer may also exchange.
- The cards in the talon are not visible to the players.
Gameplay
- The player to the dealer's left leads the first trick.
- Each player must follow suit if they can.
- If you do not have the suit led, you may play any other card.
- In a trump contract, the highest trump card wins the trick.
- If no trump is played, the highest card of the suit led wins the trick.
- The winner of the trick leads the next trick.
- A total of 13 tricks are played.
- In the next round, a new contract is chosen (each contract only once).
- The 6th time a player has to choose a contract, only 1 option will be available.
- The entire game therefore lasts 3 players x 6 contracts = 18 rounds.
Scoring
- Each player must win a set number of tricks per round, depending on the contract.
- In standard contracts, this is 7 tricks for the player to the dealer's left, 5 tricks for the player to the right, and 1 trick for the dealer.
- In Mizerka, this is reversed: 1 trick for the left, 5 tricks for the right, and 7 tricks for the dealer.
- In standard contracts, you get 1 extra point for each trick above your target, and 1 minus point for each trick below your target.
- In Mizerka, this is reversed: extra tricks count as penalty points instead.
End of the Game
- Each player must choose each contract exactly once.
- Therefore, a full game consists of 18 rounds.
- After the final round, all points are added up.
- The player with the most points wins the game.
