Rules of the online card game Oh Hell
Oh Hell is a classic trick-taking card game. It is usually played with 4 players, but in this online version you can play with 2 to 8 players. The goal is to score as many points as possible by accurately predicting the number of tricks you will win. This page explains the standard rules and the available game variants.
Cards and card values
Oh Hell is played with a standard 52-card deck. Cards rank from 2 through 10, Jack, Queen, King and Ace. When a trump suit is active, trump cards outrank all other suits.
Preparation
- In the first round, each player is dealt 10 cards.
- A trump suit is determined for the round.
Gameplay
- At the start of each round, every player bids how many tricks they expect to win.
-
The dealer may not bid in such a way that the total number of bids equals the number of cards dealt.
Example: With 3 players and 7 cards each, if player 1 bids 2 and player 2 bids 3, the dealer may not bid 2. - The player to the dealer’s left leads the first trick.
- Players must follow suit if possible.
- If a player cannot follow suit, any card may be played; playing trump is not required.
- After all players have played a card, the highest card wins the trick.
- The winner of the trick leads the next one.
Scoring and winner
- Each trick won is worth 1 point.
- Players who exactly match their bid receive a bonus of 10 points.
- The player with the highest total score after the final round wins the game.
Number of rounds
- The game starts with a round of 10 cards per player.
- Each following round, one fewer card is dealt.
- After the round with 1 card, the number of cards increases again.
- The final round is played with 10 cards per player.
Game variants (adjustable when starting the game)
- The total number of rounds can be adjusted.
- You can choose decreasing and increasing rounds, increasing only, decreasing only, or random.
- Rounds without a trump suit can be enabled.
- The bonus for matching the bid is adjustable (default is 10 points).
- You can choose whether the dealer may bid freely.
