Rules of the Spades card game
SPADES is an easy card game played with 4 players. The goal of the game is to score as many points as possible, with spades always being trump. Below you will find the detailed rules and some variations.
Cards and values:
Spades is played with all 52 playing cards. The cards have the values: 2 through 10, Jack, Queen, King, and Ace.
Trump cards (spades) always have a higher value (in the same order).
Preparation
- All players receive 13 cards.
- Spades are always trump.
Bidding
- Each player predicts how many tricks they expect to win.
- It is important to try and reach at least this number.
Gameplay
- The player to the left of the dealer starts the trick by playing a card.
- The other players must play a card of the same suit (hearts, spades, diamonds, clubs).
- If a player does not have the led suit, they may play another suit; playing trump cards is not mandatory.
- Once all players have played a card, the winner of the trick is the person with the highest-played card (a trump card is always higher in value).
- The winner receives 1 (trick) point and gets to start the next trick.
Scoring
- If a player reaches the exact number of bid tricks, the player receives 10 points per bid trick.
- For each extra trick won above the bid, the player receives 1 extra point (example: 5 tricks bid and 6 won = 50 + 1 = 51 points).
- If a player fails to reach the bid number of tricks, the player gets 0 points for that round.
End of the Game
- Multiple rounds are played until a player reaches 500 points.
- The first player to reach 500 points wins the game!
Variations
- The number of required points for victory is configurable.
